And it’s SOOOO unsanitary. You can’t tell me that you want to grab the same tongs and servings spoons that 1,000 other people already touched, many of who probably didn’t wash their hands, or licked their finger when some sauce spilled on it at the last station. YUCK!! Besides, we all know that those buffets really add on the pounds by the end of the cruise.

TO KID OR NOT TO KID?

Let's face it, we love our own kids and grandchildren, and maybe we even like kids in general. But we have our limits when it comes to other people’s screaming kids, doing unthinkable things in the pool, blocking your way to the ice cream when you really need some! And eating so much ice cream that the ship can only offer two flavors at time. And what a MESS!Not to mention how YOU are freaking out while they climb on the ships railings and balconies, and the parents don’t care or are nowhere to be found.

CRAVE SOMETHING DIFFERENT!

I don’t know about you, but for me, someone who has taken dozens of cruises on all of the major cruise lines, my biggest issue is that aside from going to some different cruise ports and a few other subtle differences, it’s essentially the SAME EXPERIENCE EVERY TIME.(If this sounds like you, or even if you aren't sure it does, read on).The ships differ in size and layout. But the experience is nearly the same, especially when it comes to the entertainment.
Everything revolves around the cruise director. Sometimes they are fun and great, and sometimes they can be CORNY AS HELL, and let’s face it, a bit annoying. They and their team spend a lot of time and effort selling you on Spa services, photo packages, jewelry events, port shopping tips/experts that turn into coupons on their preferred vendors ashore, raffles galore, sale tables, 70/80’s sail away party, piano bar, live music venues. Some of this is FUN, let’s not kid ourselves, but you’ve experienced it all many times before.
The stage shows. Some are good. Some are embarrassingly bad. The word “corny” comes to mind again. As incredibly talented as most of these performers are, so many of the shows are from another era. I was on a cruise recently and they had a full production of Cats. Remember that from the 80’s? Well, ¾ of the audience did not return after intermission. It was uncomfortable for all involved. Maybe they were allergic to cats like my husband! Or maybe they are craving something new. There are only so many times we can watch the magician cut the lady in the box in half. Again, some shows are VERY well up to par, some newer ships have acrobats and special effects. But you take a risk on most of the ships that they just don’t have the ability to put on a modern show with broad ADULT appeal. Those in their 20’s and 30’s almost never come to the shows or stick around until the end, because the performances are just not relevant anymore.
Besides, when you go on a vacation, do you really want it to be nearly the same each time, the way your life is each day? You waited a long time, paid a LOT, and have limited time. Wouldn’t you like to VENTURE OUTSIDE of what you are used to? Escape from the same things that these ships have been offering for DECADES? Maybe a NEW private island you never visited before? A new casino? Different food and drinks?

Why are you paying for THAT???

On top of this, you are expected to pay for things that you would think would be included in the cruise fare. Simple things like soda and bottled water. Shouldn’t they be flowing and available ship wide after the price you paid? And what about Wi-Fi? Should you be expected to pay top dollar for an internet package so you can TRULY RELAX knowing you can stay in touch with anyone both on and off the ship at virtually any time? I mean, what century is this anyway? You have Wi-Fi at home, and at work, and internet access at the supermarket. You deserve to have it on vacation without paying an arm and a leg.
You are ALSO expected to pay GRATUITIES to the staff. It used to already be expensive at $10 per person per day a few years ago, and has now soared to around $20 per person per day or more. This is all whether you received great service or not! Think about it for a minute…why are you paying this again? “Tip our staff whether you interact with them or not!” That is essentially what they are saying. They want you to tip the restaurant maître d'. What if you only go to the restaurants for two nights and they never even say hi to you? Doesn’t that make you just a LITTLE BIT ANGRY?

Now, let’s really talk about the elephant in the room. For most of us, a good part of the reason we go on a cruise is to experience the FOOD! We love to go out to dinner but hesitate to splurge on fine dining at home, since it’s going to cost over $100 per couple, and we run the risk of not loving our selection. Our cruises are our chance to sample new cuisines and break away from our daily mundane dinners we slave over for ourselves night after night, or just slap together and don’t really enjoy. We already talked about the buffet. But dinner is where it’s at. We’ve had a long day of doing everything or nothing, whatever our heart desires. Now it’s time for an amazing meal. You’ve paid the big bucks to be on the ship, so now you deserve the finest cuisine the chefs have to offer, and the very best overall dining staff and experience. Right? WRONG!!! You get the basic menu, and the regular wait staff. The food might be great! Sometimes it’s a step up from what you’re used to. And more often than not the wait staff are good, and in some cases you build a nice rapport and some memories with them, even after just one night together. That’s how it should be! But, in the back of your mind, you know there are some guests who put up even MORE MONEY to get the really good stuff. The “specialty dining” folks. Anyone can do this of course! Just pay an extra $60-$250 or more per couple and the very best food and service is yours! But here’s a question. Couldn’t they just do that for everyone? Does it really cost them that much more, and wouldn’t that dramatically improve the guest experience and their rebooking rate? Instead, the cruise lines’ motto is, have them keep paying and FEELING like they are getting more value. If they don’t pay extra for the good stuff they won’t appreciate it as much. GRRRRRR…

There’s something else we’ve really gotten used to on the major cruise lines,

so used to it in fact that most don’t even question it anymore. The incredibly restrictive rules about changes after you book, and the cancellation policies. This has gotten really bad. You want to make a booking. The first thing you often have to do now is decide if you want a “refundable” or “non-refundable” fare. Book non-refundable, and you risk losing a deposit, typically $200 or more. It’s gone! Poof! Faster than using Harry Potter’s wand. Book a refundable fare and you pay more right out of the gate. It’s an impossible choice! You can’t even ask them to simply change the date on the cruise you paid for. Or when you realize you can’t go you can’t even change the booking to someone else! Why can’t they just change names? Did they sign some kind of contract with the devil that won’t let them make a name change? They have no obligation to keep your names on the booking while it is “active” than they do if you cancel your booking altogether. So why are they making you pay though the nose when it’s no skin off of theirs when your plans change?I could go on and on. The major, traditional cruise lines have taken things for granted for too long. They aren’t playing fair. They want more for less, and act like they are doing you a favor when they give you what you are entitled to. So what are you supposed to do?
